You have probably spent plenty of time online, researching your hair restoration options. You’ve tried various shampoos and remedies, but nothing seems to work. In your research you have come across Hair Restoration Surgery as one of the treatment options. The types of hair restoration procedures vary, but are you a good hair transplant candidate? Are there factors that might prevent you from having the surgery?
What Makes a Good Hair Transplant Candidate?
First of all, make sure to get a professional opinion. Consult a board certified hair restoration surgeon! The importance of this step cannot be overstated. Age, genetics, degree of hair loss, and even the color of your hair may play a role in this important decision. You may be a candidate for hair transplant surgery if you have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of your head (donor areas).
Age
Hair loss tends to be progressive, so age of the patient plays a role in determining whether you are a good candidate for a transplant procedure. Most of our patients are men and women at least 35 years old who have abundant donor hair on the back of their head. A hair transplant procedure is not usually advisable in patients younger than 25 years of age; in these cases it is best to delay the decision to have surgery until a more complete picture of your future hair loss can be determined.
Your Overall Health
Before you consider any type of surgical procedure, make sure you are in good overall health. A good immune system speeds up the recovery process significantly. Discuss any underlying health issues and existing conditions (like diabetes) with your doctor.
Type of Hair Loss
When assessing the amount of hair loss there are two important factors to consider: the degree of your hair loss and the quality of your donor hair. A good supply of healthy hair follicles is essential in ensuring a successful procedure. People with diseased donor supply or really low density in the donor area are not good candidates for a hair transplant procedure.
