When Hair Transplant Is Not Suitable For You

When Hair Transplant Is Not Suitable For You

Although modern hair transplant procedures guarantee natural-looking results, it doesn’t mean every hair loss patient will qualify. That’s why Dr. Joseph Williams conducts a thorough examination on each patient to ensure they’re suitable. Depending on the extent of your male pattern baldness, we may rule you out for the following reasons:

  • You’re Too Young

Hair loss is a gradual process that continues well into old age. Although most men start noticing it in their 30s or 40s, it begins earlier for others. If your hair loss started in your teens or early to mid-20s, it won’t make sense to opt for a transplant. That’s because the baldness will keep spreading as you grow older, so you’ll need to undergo more surgeries. It’s therefore advisable to wait until your condition stabilizes before opting for a comprehensive solution.

  • You Have Low Hair Density

Even though we don’t recommend hair transplant surgery at a young age, we also advise against waiting too long. If the balding spreads across a large part of your scalp, the procedure could be costlier and more demanding. The same is true if you have low hair density because chances are you won’t have a reliable donor area. During your examination, Dr. Williams will determine whether it will produce enough follicles to provide natural-looking results.

  • Other Treatment Options May Work

Various non-surgical treatment plans have decent chances of success. One of the most effective involves medication such as Rogaine and Finasteride. Others are laser therapy, platelet-rich plasma therapy, and micro-needling. Dr. Williams won’t immediately recommend hair transplant surgery if other alternatives can fix your hair loss problem.

  • You Can Style Your Hair into a New Look

Some people naturally appear fashionable with a bald head. Instead of opting for expensive procedures, they shave off the remaining hair and adopt it as a new look. You can try this option if you have an oval face or another head shape that suits a close shave. It also buys you time if you still plan on having a hair transplant but still want to weigh your options. Another cosmetic solution that might work well is scalp micro-pigmentation.

  • You’re Susceptible to Other Medical Risks

Underlying medical conditions sometimes trigger hair loss. To rule them out, Dr. Williams performs several tests. One of them is a blood test that might uncover these hidden illnesses. The other is a pull test, which shows the extent of the shedding process. He also performs a scalp biopsy, during which he plucks some hair and skin samples from your scalp for further analysis. The final examination is the light microscopy test, which examines trimmed hairs to identify any disorders with their shafts.

If we find any issues, we will recommend more specialized tests or treatment of the underlying condition first. Generally, this procedure is not desirable if you have certain complications. They include diabetes, liver failure, hemophilia, and blood-borne illnesses such as Hepatitis and HIV.

Just because you don’t immediately qualify for a hair transplant doesn’t mean you can’t try again in the future. Once you reach a suitable age, treat underlying medical conditions, or complete your research, you can always sign up for another evaluation. Dr. Williams will always give you his honest opinion because your interests come first.
